Why are slate pool tables better?

We often get asked the question - Are slate bed pool tables better? Most people know top-quality pool tables are fitted with slate bed playing surfaces, but why is that?

The use of slate on billiard tables can be traced back to the 1820s, and The Brunswick Company made the first pool table with slate in 1845. The slate's flatness, hardness, and consistency allowed players to improve their skills, make more accurate shots, and achieve higher performance levels than were previously possible on wooden tables with cloth playing surfaces.
