Get ready for the next thrilling chapter of the Mosconi Cup, the ultimate showdown in American 9-Ball Pool. After a truly unique event last month, in which Europe retained the trophy, Matchroom Sports, the masterminds behind the event, have announced a game-changing twist for the next edition. Both the European and American teams will be entirely wildcard picks.
Prepare for the next battles between Europe and the States, set to unfold on American soil. The 2014 event, eagerly awaited by pool enthusiasts, will take place in the ultimate showman's playground- Las Vegas, adding an extra layer of excitement to the already intense competition.
The 11-9 European victory at the York Halls in London this year marked a significant shift in the balance of power, with the American team winning the prestigious trophy only once in the last seven years. The next event, scheduled for December this year, promises to be a game-changer, with the teams being made up entirely from wildcard picks, ensuring the biggest names in the sport will be on display.
The 2013 event could well be the greatest Mosconi Cup to date. It has all the makings of being the ultimate tournament. It will be staged in one of the world's greatest cities, contain the biggest names in pool, and mark 100 years since the birth of cue sports legend Willie Mosconi. On the competition's 20th anniversary, it will be interesting to see if the States can close the gap on the high-flying European 9-ball pool team.
Matchroom sports chairman and Mosconi cup founder Barry Hearn commented:
"When I first promoted the Mosconi Cup back in December 1994, it was an instant hit, and it has been very satisfying to have seen it grow into the biggest tournament on the pool calendar".
"Last December at the York Hall, we saw one of the closest Mosconi Cups of recent times, and we were rewarded with fantastic viewing figures on Sky Sports and blanket live coverage on ESPN3 in the USA.
"2013 will see a very special event in many ways as it is its 20th year and we plan to make Mosconi Cup XX the biggest and best one yet.
"We will be pulling out the stops to bring the biggest names in pool from both sides of the Atlantic together for a humdinger of a match and I hope that the competition has helped cement Willie Mosconi's legacy and kept his name alive to new generations of pool fans."
The precise details of the event have yet to be released, but we will update you as soon as http://www.matchroomsport.com/ releases the details.
The American 9-ball pool game continues to go from strength to strength.
