Pool tables generally use slate because it is a highly dense and stable material, which provides a consistent playing surface for the game of pool. Slate is a natural stone that is mined from quarries, and it is typically used in the construction of high-quality pool tables.
Slate is considered an ideal material for pool tables because of its low porosity, hardness, and stability. It is also resistant to warping and cracking, making it a durable surface for the pool table. Additionally, slate maintains its flatness over time and can be machined highly, allowing for precise levelling and consistent ball roll.
UK pool table slates are mined from either Italy or Brazil. Unfortunately, Welsh slate is a little too brittle for UK pool, so Italy and Brazil lead the way. Although Italian or Brazilian slate is substantial, it also has a degree of flexibility, making it perfect for a UK pool table as it beds itself onto the cabinet supports, ensuring an ideal level.
Beyond its performance, slate is also aesthetically pleasing. Its smooth and even surface allows for a quality playing experience, but it also looks visually appealing.
Overall, slate is a valuable and preferred material in the construction of pool tables because it provides excellent performance, longevity, and a consistent playing surface for the game of pool. Other materials have been tried over the years, but nothing is yet to match slate's perfection.
